Newtowncrommelin village, located in the beautiful Glenravel, or 'Tenth Glen', was founded in 1824. For its celebrations on its 200 year anniversary, the village will be hosting an International Furnace Festival, next to many more activities. There are already confirmed smelters and blacksmiths from the US, Canada, Denmark and the UK as well as Irish participants.
Louis Crommelin, a Huguenot from northern France, discovered iron ore nearby and built a blast furnace. Although the furnace never successfully worked and still stands in the village, the surrounded landscape was transformed by the iron mines.
